Our heroine explores love s foibles, failures and bliss, from amorous to humorous. This acclaimed vocalist embodies the lost art of song savvy, inhabiting the lyric and allowing each melody to shine. On this fourteen song collection, Russell takes us on a journey from Harlem dance hall to Parisian Café, from Store Front Church to Uptown Cabaret blurring distinctions between the carnal and the eternal in a musical tour-de-force. For these sessions, Russell reunites with the team from her previous chart-topping album Inside This Heart of Mine, including recording engineer Katherine Miller, producer Paul Kahn and Musical Director/Guitarist/Banjoist/Arranger Matt Munisteri, who contributes his expansive vision to the project. A masterful singer who knows how to inject her own personality into the heart of a great song. And as she shows with Luci, she s capable of writing a nuanced, alluring number herself. –The Philadelphia Inquirer Russell sings in a marvelously full, rich alto and hangs just a hint of a blue scrim over her cheerful, straight-shooting, girl-next-door innocence. Her haunting version of No More with its '50s-modern arrangement, is easily as good as Billie Holiday's. –Paul de Barros, The Seattle Times Catherine Russell is one of the most exciting talents among new jazz singers. –Jeff Simon, Buffalo News

I Cover The Waterfront [05:01] Bring It Back, the latest album from vocalist Catherine Russell, set for release February 11, is a retro collection of tunes culled from the birth of jazz through the rhythm and blues resurrection, with a nod to the swing era in between. And if there is any singer with the kind of chops to sell this kind of musical variety, Russell is that singer. Not only does she have a voice like rich, aged brandy, not only does she exude the rhythmic joy the music demands, this is music that is in her blood. After all, her mother is the great jazz pioneer Carline Ray, and her father, arranger Luis Russell, was longtime leader of the Louis Armstrong band. With a pedigree like that, how can she miss? She doesn’t. russellWorking with a 10-piece band on most of the 13-track set, she hits each and every tune out of the park. Some of the songs are well known, some have been largely forgotten, but either way, Russell’s readings reinvigorate them. In her hands they breathe with renewed life. Whether it’s beginning a venerable classic like “The Darktown Strutters’ Ball” with a little-heard verse, or swinging her way though “I’m Sticking with You Baby,” she makes each song her own. Russell does a stripped down version of Fats Waller’s “Strange as It Seems,” giving the band a rest as she duets with the piano. She kills with her low down version of “Aged and Mellow;” as she vamps, “I like my men like I like my whiskey/Aged and mellow.” It is blues at its best, and her take on the better known “After the Lights Go Down Low” is equally effective. The singer celebrates the swing era with a three-song block: “I’m Shooting High,” “I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart,” and “You Got to Swing and Sway.” Close your eyes and you can’t help but picture the songstress in front of the big band. More sentimentally, she also includes a recently rediscovered song by her father, “Lucille,” performed publicly here for the first time. The disc closes with a fine rendition of “I Cover the Waterfront.” There’s life still in the old music, at least when it’s Catherine Russell singing. Let Me Be the First to Know (5:04) With her sixth album, Harlem On My Mind, Grammy® Award-winning vocalist Catherine Russell journeys to the blue heart of the great African American songbook. Swinging forth with soulful interpretations, Russell taps the golden age of Harlem, as befits this vibrant daughter of jazz. Vocalists Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Etta James, and Dinah Washington provide inspiration where tunesmiths like Benny Carter, Irving Berlin, Andy Razaf and Fats Waller once ruled the roost of a renaissance which continues to reverberate. Of the title track, Russell says, “It’s about not forgetting your roots,” which also serves as her modus operandi for the entire 12 song collection. “The album is comprised of songs from artists who played at The Apollo in Harlem, where all African American artists of note appeared.” Russell is a native New Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a legendary pianist/composer/bandleader and Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical director. Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering vocalist/guitarist/bassist who performed with International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Sy Oliver. Russell notes, “My mother was born and raised in Harlem and my father led one of the leading orchestras in Harlem, which was part of the inspiration for this album.” Track No.13 ''Goin' to Town'' is available only as a bonus track on the digital version. Harlem On My Mind showcases Russell’s honey rich voice in a variety of settings. “I love working with saxophonist/arranger Andy Farber,” says Russell, and here Farber contributes five arrangements for tentet, featuring six horns, including Jon-Erik Kellso and Alphonso Horne on trumpets, John Allred on trombone, and Mark Lopeman and Dan Block on reeds. Her smaller groups swing equally hard, sometimes with fewer horns and sometimes stripped down to her road tested rhythm section, including musical director/guitarist/banjoist Matt Munisteri, pianist Mark Shane, bassist Tal Ronen, and drummer Mark McLean. Don’t Take Your Love From Me features a special guest appearance by tenor saxophonist Fred Staton, of the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band, who was 100-years-old at the time of the recording session, playing beautifully. Throughout, Russell and her band shine, whether serving up dollops of aural comfort food, or go for the rafters explosion of fun.
